Rule of Thumb

It's a pretty good rule of thumb for musicians (and others) that trying to do something- no matter how wrong-headed or how totally you end up abandoning it- will always get you farther than merely trying to avoid doing something. A bad idea may ultimately lead you to a good idea, while nothing, as they say, comes of nothing.
