Introducing: The Grey Forest

Our latest book introduction comes from Maureen A. Griswold, introducting The Grey Forest, a collection of short stories.

The Grey Forest

by Maureen A. Griswold

The Grey Forest book cover

Two factors created the title of my short story collection,The Grey Forest. The first I believe I share with most others who’ve managed to survive beyond three decades or so of mortal life on this spinning globe we happen to inhabit. It’s the eventual realization there’s damn little in life that’s truly black or truly white. Life, experience, and ultimately truth, turn out to be varying shades of grey. Realizing this much makes life a heck of a lot more interesting and worth paying attention to.

The second factor is my surname, “Griswold” — associated with England, early American politics, and National Lampoon’s lunacy-rich Vacation movies. “Griswold,” has Germanic roots and means “from the grey forest”. Thus, between factor one and my convenient last name, The Grey Forest title was basically handed to me.

I love short stories and short fiction for their sheer, often powerful, economy. I’m of the generation which had great short story television: The Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Outer Limits, One Step Beyond, and more — highly imagined, tightly presented new stories every week. Short stories, especially Ray Bradbury’s The Illustrated Man, were taught in high school as well as American classic short stories. My college literature courses also featured short stories.

The Grey Forest is not fantasy or escapist fare. These are modern-day stories featuring modern-day characters encountering situations that ultimately enlarge their worldview. Most of the stories are amalgams: real-life experience or circumstances catalyzing imagination and the eventual crafting of a story. Packed into the 76 pages of The Grey Forest are elements of love, intuition, deception, competition, war, ethics, bonds of father-son, fame, wealth, greed, generosity, and more. Some of the protagonists include the son of a Silicon Valley magnate, a young Army nurse, a retired defense industry engineer, a child victim of war, a lobbyist, the owner of a candle shop, an elderly social pariah.

As with the characters in The Grey Forest, may its readers find pause to reflect and see the world in new ways. It’s my hope readers find The Grey Forest to be a worthwhile journey.
